New Frontiers

In the past ten years, Costa Rica has become one of the most widely sought-after world-class surfing destinations in the world. Several reasons including warm tropical water throughout the year, easy access from anywhere in North America, and numerous, challenging point and reef breaks on both the Pacific and Caribbean oceans, that can be reached within hours by a non-four wheel drive vehicles. Among the most well known breaks include Pavones on the Pacific, and Salsas on the Atlantic coast.

Pavones has often been referred to as the longest left on the entire Pacific coast in the northern hemisphere, while Salsas on the Caribbean side, gives realistic training to later tackle the North shore Juice of Hawaii.

Whats the catch?

A new, relatively unknown spot is beginning to emerge as a classic point break that few have heard about, and even fewer have been able to enjoy. Access to this area has always been difficult, but in recent years, thanks to Army Corps. of Engineers, several bridges have been completed and roads have been maintained allowing entrance year round. Cabo Matapalo in the southern most part of the country is in short, the New Frontier!

Cabo Matapalo is home to three world class waves
( Located on the Osa Peninsula )

Hog Hole : Nearest the cape, this excellent point-reef break, also called Matapalito, provides a very steep fast wave that breaks to the right from low to medium high tide.

Back Wash : The second break called Back-wash bay, breaks over a reef, within a cove. The beach, which has a steep berm, tends to return the energy back towards the line-up, causing the wave to jack-up, producing un -forgettable pitching lips and steep sections.

Pan Dulce : The third break, Punta Pan Dulce, is a double point break that has been likened to Rincon in California, ( minus the crowd ), and has several fast hollow sections that break over a rock bottom. Flocks of scarlet macaws circle the break, and land in almond trees along the shore. Dolphins often challenge surfers for the biggest waves and provide unreal entertainment as they execute fin first take-offs and 360's. ( Just kidding about the fin first take-offs )

Hacienda Bahia Esmeralda is located on a lush hillside overlooking the Golfo Dulce and within minutes you can be paddling in the breaks. The lodge can be described as casual elegance surrounded by primary rainforest and offers some of the best cuisine found in the country. This is the ideal surf destination for up-scale surfers who demand excellent lodging, fabulous food, and a breathtaking setting within reach of Costa Rica's finest uncrowded waves.

The lodge also features a natural spring-fed pool, barbecue area, and numerous trails to explore virgin forest areas. Excursions by boat to Pavones across the bay, can be arranged to provide our guests the ultimate left hand waves, after enjoying the Mata Palo area exclusive right-handers.The right-left connection, all within a day. Mata Palo is unique and stands alone.

The South swell season in Costa Rica generally begins in February and ends in November. Low season rates coincide with the rainy season and fortunately with the south swells. The lodge can comfortably accommodate up to ten persons.
